A Good Start

This morning I started a weeks work experience in my local vet.  I have done work experience there before, but not since i’ve started veterinary, so I was a little apprehensive that I would be asked all kinds of questions and not know the answers. The first thing I saw as I walked in the door this morning calmed my nerves, a gorgeous little border terrier female in for her spay. I got to watch the spay and the vet was really good at telling me exactly what he was doing, no awkward questions for me. As well as a few xrays, a little wild bird came in for a check over, and there is an ex-lap this evening which should be interesting, I’ll let you know how it goes!

  1. Update: the dog who had the ex-lap turned out to have an inguinal hernia and had to have a section of small bowel removed, she made a good recovery and got to go home a few days later. I saw another two Border Terriers over the week among other cases. One sad one was a young female cocker spaniel who was transferrred from the emergency night clinic in the university, she had vomiting, diarrhoea, excess salivation and a very depressed mood. Her blood tests didnt show anything so the vets referred her back to the university. Unfortunately she died there a short time later from hemhorraging. It turned out she had Lungworm, but it wasnt picked up until too late as her presenting signs were quite atypical. There is a big increase in lungworm a the moment so be sure to treat your pets against it, see http://www.lungworm.co.uk for info.
